Inclusive Play Spaces
Everybody has the right to access & use public urban space independently, equally, & without discrimination. The provision of this depends on the accessibility of our cities, & particularly the spaces dedicated to children. When designing inclusive playgrounds we open the spaces to many different community members, infants, the elderly & others who may have accessibility challenges.
The first large-scale National Survey on People with Disabilities in Vietnam was conducted in 2016. The survey found that 7% (6.2 million people) of the population aged 2 years & older have a disability, while 13% (almost 12 million people) live in a household with a person who has a disability.
Necessary & beneficial contact between children with & without disabilities is encouraged for better health. Inclusive playgrounds allow all children to play with siblings, family & other children from the neighbourhood.
Think Playgrounds’ unique approach of mobilizing local communities in a participatory manner means involving local government entities, as well as specialists & disability groups.
Inclusive playgrounds are not more expensive than conventional playgrounds when the integrative approach is taken into consideration from the initial phase of design.
